NALDA Project in Igboye to Boost Food Security, Tackle Youth Unemployment
The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has announced a major agricultural development project in Igboye, Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State, designed to enhance food production, create jobs, and reduce rural-urban migration.
The initiative, which forms part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is expected to position Igboye as a key agricultural hub, supplying food to Lagos and neighbouring states.
According to NALDA’s Director of Finance and Accounts, Mrs. Chinwe Ozumma, the project will introduce mechanised farming, improved seedlings, irrigation systems, and farmer cooperatives to increase yields and reduce post-harvest losses.
She said the programme would also deliver infrastructure such as access roads and water facilities, while integrating security measures to protect farmers and farmlands.
“Our focus is to turn rural communities into engines of agricultural productivity. By providing modern tools and market access, we will create sustainable income streams and empower rural households,” Mrs. Ozumma said.
The Orijeru of Igboye, Oba Abdulrasaq Musa, described the project as a breakthrough for the community, particularly in addressing youth unemployment.
“Our young people have been leaving in search of opportunities elsewhere. With this project, they can now build their futures here, on the same land their ancestors tilled,” the monarch said.
“This is our project; we must protect it and support it. If we work together, the benefits will reach every family, and Igboye will become a model for rural development in Nigeria,” he said.
NALDA’s Senior Technical Officer, Mr. Olusegun Owolabi, noted that preparations would begin with land mapping, farmer registration, and training.
He added that although a Memorandum of Understanding has been presented, the agreement is still under review, with work set to commence soon.
Community leaders present at the event included Chief J.A. Otunowo, Oluti of Igboye and Baale of Tilowuro Village; Chief C.O. Ariyo, Baale of Erimope; Chief Onalaja Shakiru, Baale of Ogoigoi; Chief Adebowale Olumide, Baale of Talase/Gbojuwara; Chief Gbemi Onakoya, Baale of Esebute; Chief Toyin Sangosanya, Baale of Oriwu; as well as the Baales of Egan and Oke Egan.
The project is expected to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, strengthen Lagos’ food supply chain, and support Nigeria’s drive for food security and rural development.
