CAPPA Launches National Youth Bootcamp on Food Justice in Ekiti

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) will kick off its Youth Bootcamp for Food Justice 2025 on Sunday, August 24, at the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort in Ekiti State.

The week-long programme, organized in partnership with the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), will run until August 29 and bring together young Nigerians from all six geopolitical zones.

A statement signed by Media and Communication Officer, CAPPA, Robert Egbe, said the residential bootcamp is designed to equip the next generation of leaders with skills to address issues at the intersection of food, health, and policy. Over five days, participants will engage in hands-on workshops, policy simulations, media strategy design, and scenario planning exercises.

CAPPA Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi said the initiative responds to Nigeria’s growing burden of non-communicable diseases, driven by excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods and weak regulatory oversight.

“Food justice is becoming one of the defining public health and social issues of our time,” he said. “This bootcamp equips young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills to shape nutrition policies and healthier food environments for our communities,” he said.

The programme features local and international experts in food policy and public health, including campaigners and social justice advocates. Sessions will focus on Nigeria’s food environment, the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSB) Tax, legislative pathways to tackle non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and strategies for grassroots mobilisation.

Experts warn that NCDs now account for nearly 30 percent of deaths in Nigeria, with hypertension, diabetes, and obesity on the rise. Without stronger oversight of the food and beverage industry, public health advocates say the country risks a costly health crisis similar to those faced by other nations.

Beyond policy training, the bootcamp aims to foster a national network of food justice advocates who can share experiences, coordinate campaigns, and amplify each other’s work.
