Lagos Lawyer, Victim Commend AIG Ochalla for Compassionate Intervention

A Lagos-based lawyer, Barrister Olayinka Sanni, a victim of alleged police misconduct, Olawale Iyanda, and his father, have commended the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos, Margaret Ochalla, for her swift and humane intervention in a recent rights abuse case.

The commendation followed AIG Ochalla’s response to a petition alleging extortion and misconduct involving Inspector Kalu and a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator.

Acting on her directive, the Commissioner of Police, X-Squad, launched an investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects.

During interrogation, Inspector Kalu admitted receiving reports that Iyanda had been disturbing residents, while Iyanda himself confessed to involvement in identity theft, providing evidence to investigators.

He was subsequently granted bail, pending further investigation.

The POS operator also confessed that Iyanda had once requested ₦4 million in cash, which he later returned without explanation.

Following the AIG’s directive, the funds were recovered and returned to the petitioner.

Beyond ensuring accountability, AIG Ochalla took the unusual step of personally settling the victim’s medical bills, a gesture that has drawn widespread praise.

Meanwhile, disciplinary proceedings against Inspector Kalu are ongoing through an Orderly Room Trial.

Speaking during a visit to her office, Barrister Sanni hailed AIG Ochalla as a reformist who leads with integrity, urging others in positions of authority to emulate her compassion and commitment to justice.

In her response, AIG Ochalla reiterated the FCID’s zero tolerance for corruption and misconduct.

She assured that the police under her watch remain committed to fairness, accountability, and quality service delivery, and encouraged the public to report unprofessional conduct through official complaint channels.
