Speaking after his election, the new DECAN President, Sunday Odita, pledged to prioritise members' welfare while strengthening partnerships with stakeholders in the defence and security sector.

Odita said a professionally empowered and motivated membership was crucial to effective defence journalism and promised that the new leadership would work towards building a stronger and more united association.

He also said the association would engage critical stakeholders within the defence, security and intelligence community to promote collaboration aimed at improving national security and creating an environment conducive for economic growth and development.

“The media, defence institutions and other strategic actors must continue to work together in promoting accurate reporting, public trust and informed discourse on security matters,” Odita said.

The new DECAN President commended Nigerian troops for their sacrifices in confronting security threats across various theatres of operation, describing their efforts as vital to protecting the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also praised the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, for their roles in sustaining peace and stability.

Odita said the collective efforts of the Armed Forces and other security agencies had contributed significantly to national security and created conditions necessary for socio-economic development.

He reaffirmed DECAN’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, security and national development while serving as a credible link between the military, security institutions and the Nigerian public.
