International Widows’ Day: POWA to Establish Mental Health Support Network for Police Widows
The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) says it will establish a sustainable mental health and psychosocial support network for police widows, as part of efforts to address the emotional and psychological challenges faced by families of fallen officers.
The National President of POWA, Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, disclosed this during activities marking the 2026 International Widows’ Day with the theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Police Widows.”
Mrs. Disu said the loss of a spouse goes beyond financial hardship, noting that many police widows silently deal with grief while caring for their children and rebuilding their lives after the death of their husbands in active service.
She stressed that emotional healing must receive the same attention as financial support.
“Our goal is simple: to ease the financial, health and emotional burdens faced by our women and to ensure that no police widow feels abandoned after her husband's service and sacrifice,” she said.
The POWA President said the planned support system would provide counselling, encouragement and a safe community for widows adjusting to life after loss.
She added that behind every fallen police officer is a family whose sacrifices must be recognised and supported.
Mrs. Disu also paid tribute to families of 17 police officers recently killed in Yobe State and three others who died in Zamfara State, assuring them of the support of the police family.
She said POWA had continued to expand welfare interventions for police families through medical consultations, dental care, eye treatment and provision of corrective eyeglasses.
The association, she added, remains committed to scholarship support for children of police personnel, ensuring that the future of children left behind is protected.
Mrs. Disu called for greater compassion and collective responsibility towards police widows, urging stakeholders to support initiatives that promote dignity, empowerment and hope for families of fallen officers.
