DECAN Seeks More Media Access to Naval Operations, Exercises

The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) has called for stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Navy through expanded opportunities for journalists to participate in naval operations, exercises and strategic maritime engagements.

DECAN made the call during a courtesy visit by its newly elected executive members to the Directorate of Naval Information in Abuja.

The DECAN President, Sunday Odita, who led the delegation, said the engagement was aimed at strengthening the relationship between defence correspondents and the Nigerian Navy while improving national security communication.

Odita said defence journalists play a crucial role in bridging the information gap between the military and the public, adding that limited access to naval activities often affects public awareness of the Navy’s operational achievements.

He urged the Navy to sustain and expand media-embedding programmes, particularly for Abuja-based correspondents, to enable journalists gain firsthand knowledge of military operations and challenges.

According to him, such exposure helps reporters understand the realities faced by military personnel and promotes more accurate and responsible security reporting.

Odita cited his participation in naval and multinational exercises, including Exercise Farauta, Exercise Prosperity in Benin Republic, Obangame Express and naval vessel reception missions, as valuable experiences that enhanced his understanding of military operations.

Responding, the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, congratulated the new DECAN leadership and described defence correspondents as important partners in communicating military activities to Nigerians.

He said the Navy had previously embedded journalists in maritime exercises and multinational operations, acknowledging the need to expand participation.

Folorunsho assured that efforts would be made to improve inclusiveness, especially as the Navy prepares for upcoming regional maritime engagements involving West African countries.

He also announced plans to strengthen engagement with journalists through periodic interactions and encouraged reporters to seek clarification whenever necessary.

DECAN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting accurate reporting and strengthening public understanding of national security matters.
