A Watershed Moment: State Police and the Future of National Security

The passage of the State Police Bill by the House of Representatives represents one of the most consequential legislative milestones in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a major breakthrough in our nation’s battle against insecurity.
For years, progressive voices across the country have argued that Nigeria’s security challenges require bold, innovative and constitutionally-backed solutions. The increasing sophistication of criminal networks, the persistence of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime have exposed the limitations of a policing structure designed for a much smaller and less complex nation.
Today, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is once again demonstrating the courage to embrace reforms that previous administrations merely discussed but failed to implement.
The House of Representatives deserves commendation for taking this historic step. Its action reflects a growing national consensus that the security of over 200 million Nigerians cannot be effectively guaranteed through a wholly centralized policing system alone. Security is most effective when it is local, intelligence-driven, proactive and closely connected to the communities it serves.
The State Police initiative is not merely a constitutional amendment; it is a strategic response to the realities of modern security challenges. It will strengthen grassroots intelligence gathering, improve response times, enhance community engagement and provide additional layers of protection for citizens while complementing the efforts of existing federal security agencies.
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has long been one of the foremost advocates of restructuring governance to improve service delivery and strengthen national development. His support for reforms that bring government closer to the people is well documented. It is therefore no surprise that under his administration, long-standing national conversations are being translated into concrete actions.
This development is particularly significant because insecurity has remained one of the major obstacles to economic growth and social progress. No nation can attain its full potential when its citizens live in fear. Farmers cannot cultivate their lands, businesses cannot flourish, investors cannot commit resources and communities cannot prosper under the shadow of insecurity.
The passage of the State Police Bill sends a powerful message that the Renewed Hope Administration is committed to addressing the structural challenges that have hindered our national development for decades.
While concerns have been raised regarding the potential misuse of State Police by state governments, such concerns should not become an excuse for inaction. Every institution is susceptible to abuse if safeguards are absent. The appropriate response is therefore to build strong constitutional protections, effective oversight mechanisms and transparent accountability frameworks - not to reject a reform whose time has clearly come.
Those who genuinely desire a safer Nigeria should welcome this development. It is a recognition that extraordinary security challenges require bold and extraordinary solutions.
The significance of this legislative action cannot be overstated. It is a watershed moment in the war against insecurity and a clear demonstration that the APC-led Federal Government is prepared to undertake difficult but necessary reforms in the interest of national security and development.
As this constitutional process progresses, I urge the Senate, State Houses of Assembly, traditional institutions, civil society organizations and all patriotic Nigerians to support this initiative. The security of our nation transcends political affiliations and sectional interests.
Future generations may look back on this moment as the point at which Nigeria decisively began to modernize its security architecture and empower communities to become active partners in safeguarding peace and stability.
The Renewed Hope Agenda is not merely a slogan; it is increasingly becoming a framework for transformational governance. The passage of the State Police Bill stands as further evidence that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria is taking deliberate steps towards a safer, stronger and more prosperous future.
Mogaji (Hon) Seye Oladejo, Lagos APC chieftain.
