In a statement signed by the organisation's Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe on Wednesday, CAPPA criticised a two-day advocacy workshop convened last week by the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) to promote the scheme, describing it as a “sham public relations exercise.” The workshop, themed “Attracting Investment for Improved Water Supply in Lagos State through Public-Private Partnership,” drew pledges from members of the Lagos State House of Assembly to fast-track legal changes that would give private investors wide-ranging protections.  The state’s Office of PPPs also announced that a pilot project covering about 10 per cent of water infrastructure would mark Lagos’ “first concession.” Mukhtaar Tijani a...

CAPPA Faults Lagos Over Unsafe Water, Demands Public Investment

Image
The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has accused the Lagos State Government of decades-long neglect of the state’s water infrastructure, warning that millions of residents are exposed to unsafe drinking water. Reacting to recent comments by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Mahmood Adegbite, that residents of the Lekki Peninsula were probably drinking water from contaminated boreholes, CAPPA said the problem was the result of sustained policy failure, not public behaviour. In a statement by its Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe, on Sunday, the organisation said unsafe boreholes and dug wells had become the default water source for many Lagosians because the government has failed to provide reliable and affordable public supply. “For decades, residents have been forced to become their own service providers,” the group said.  “The risks from faecal contamination, untreated sewage, and poor waste...

The group said these products are being deceptively marketed as less harmful, despite mounting evidence of their dangers. Executive Director of CAPPA, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said tobacco-related illnesses are not only killing nearly 30,000 Nigerians every year, but also placing a heavy strain on the country’s already overstretched health systems and economy. “The tobacco industry is grooming the next generation of addicts to replace those it has already killed,” Oluwafemi said. “They must be stopped....
