Six Killed, Nine Injured in Fatal Crash on Lekki–Epe Expressway

Six people, including a child, lost their lives on Monday in a fatal accident at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that nine others, three males and six females were rescued with varying degrees of injuries, while four victims escaped unhurt.

The injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, and Hammond Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FMC morgue.

According to preliminary investigation, the crash involved a Volvo FL6 truck loaded with wooden planks and a commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD.

Security operatives revealed that the tragedy was caused by speeding and reckless driving.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who commiserated with the bereaved families, condemned reckless motoring practices on Lagos highways, warning that “speed thrills, but ultimately kills.”

He urged motorists to embrace patience, discipline, and defensive driving, especially during the Ember Months, which often record high traffic and accidents.

Mr. Bakare-Oki dismissed claims linking accidents to mystical causes, stressing that they are the result of human recklessness and poor judgment.

He commended the joint efforts of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Police, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and other responders for their swift intervention at the scene.
