Lagos Seals Illegal Lekki Reclamation Site, Arrests Five Suspects
The Lagos State Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal dredging and reclamation, sealing several sites in Lekki and apprehending five suspects during a joint enforcement operation.
The exercise, led by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon. Dayo Bush Alebiosu, saw a property at 13A Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, sealed for illegal reclamation and unauthorized fence extensions.
Alebiosu described the activities as an act of legendary audacity, noting the property had been repeatedly sealed in the past but continued operations without approval.
Commissioner for Physical Planning, Dr. Olumide Oluyinka, revealed that the owner initially presented a layout of 1,200 sqm but had illegally expanded it to 8,000 sqm.
He said the state would revoke all approvals and ensure prosecution of offenders, warning that illegal parties held at the site posed risks to lives.
The enforcement team also sealed dredging sites along the Lekki foreshore where operators had no Environmental Impact Assessment approvals.
Officials disclosed that sand was being dredged up to 7km into the lagoon without records, and water channels had been blocked by illegal operators.
Permanent Secretaries from the Office of Drainage Services and the Ministry of the Environment said the activities threatened water flow and the ecosystem. They confirmed that previous stop-work orders had been ignored.
Alebiosu stressed that the clampdown followed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s recent Waterfront Summit pledge to safeguard Lagos lagoons.
He warned that illegal operators risk prosecution and possible forfeiture of reclaimed sites.
