President Tinubu Pledges Swift Implementation of Bilateral Agreements with Colombia
President Bola Tinubu has assured the government of Colombia of Nigeria’s commitment to speedily implement all agreements reached between both countries.
Speaking at the State House, Abuja, on Monday while receiving Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Márquez, President Tinubu said Nigeria would replicate with Colombia the bilateral agreements earlier signed with Brazil on aviation and consular matters.
“I believe the Vice President and his team have done the job. Our business opportunities with Colombia have already been enhanced. Particularly for Colombia, the agreement we entered with Brazil can easily be replicated in aviation, and our diplomatic relations can be enhanced. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will accelerate that,” Tinubu stated.
He urged Colombian investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and gas and agriculture sectors, stressing that the country’s youthful population offers both a vibrant market and skilled workforce.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who supervised the bilateral meetings, said the visit by Márquez would help rekindle ancestral connections disrupted by slavery and colonialism while strengthening economic, cultural, and political ties.
The Colombian Vice President, in her remarks, described her mission as symbolic, noting her country’s deep historical and cultural links with Africa.
She highlighted priority areas for collaboration, including aviation, visas, trade, political consultations, and cultural exchanges.
“As the first black Vice President of Colombia, I am extremely delighted to lead this visit to the land of our ancestors. Our ancestors were taken away from Africa centuries ago,” she said, adding that direct flights between both countries were already under discussion with business leaders.
Márquez also emphasized that Colombia’s partnership with Nigeria would advance shared values of social justice, gender equality, and inclusivity, while strengthening relations between Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Also present at the meeting were the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; Coordinating Minister of Finance and Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; and Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
