World Lung Day: Protect Nigerians from Harm Reduction Scam

Image
By Robert Egbe In May this year, I received an unusual mail. It was an invitation from a public relations firm in South Africa, one I had never heard of, to attend a program in Cape Town. They would provide logistical arrangements. All that was required was that I write and publish at least two articles related to the event and help amplify it across my networks. On examining the flyer attached, I discovered it was for a Big Tobacco event, designed to promote their so-called smokeless but nicotine-laden products. It is probable that similar invitations were sent to selected journalists across Africa. However, this is only one strand of a broader strategy. In recent times, the tobacco industry has been sponsoring media workshops presented as training on harm reduction, while pushing articles across digital platforms that cast emerging tobacco and nicotine products in a favourable light. These activities are carefully packaged as knowledge-sharing, but their underlying intent is to steer...

Nigeria’s Health Financing: Lessons From Canada’s $32.5bn Tobacco Settlement

Image
By Robert Egbe Nigeria’s decision to earmark SIN taxes – levies on alcohol, tobacco, and sugary drinks – for health financing, signals a firm commitment to prioritising citizens’ health. It also aligns with long-standing calls from Nigerian public health advocates and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The move could not be timelier. Earlier this year, a major investigation revealed that Nigerians spend about N1.92 trillion (roughly $1.26 billion) annually seeking treatment for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Almost 30 percent of deaths in the country are linked to NCDs, with tobacco, alcohol, and sugary drinks among the biggest culprits. Tobacco use alone fuels a raft of debilitating diseases: cancers of the lung, mouth, bladder, and colon; heart disease and stroke; chronic respiratory illness like COPD; type 2 diabetes; ectopic pregnancy; and premature, low birthweight babies. Globally, tobacco kills more than seven million people annually – 300,000 in Africa alone. Eight in ten ...
