The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the appointment of Chief Superintendent of Police Giwa Aliyu as the new Force New Media Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.
The appointment is part of efforts by the police leadership to strengthen the Force’s digital communication strategy and improve engagement with the public through online platforms.
The development was confirmed on Sunday by the former Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a post on the social media platform X.
According to Hundeyin, the position forms part of the newly established New Media Office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, which is expected to enhance the police’s digital outreach and improve public awareness of its operations.
Giwa, a cybersecurity specialist currently attached to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center, has over 15 years of service in the police.
During his career, he has gained experience in law enforcement operations, public order management, cybercrime investigation and cybersecurity.
He previously served as Police Assistant to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in the Department of Logistics and Supply between September 2023 and December 2024.
Giwa has also handled several communication and public relations assignments within the police system, including serving as Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Cooperative Multi-Purpose Society Limited and Assistant Police Public Relations Officer at the Obalende Annex in Lagos.
He also worked as Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Police Command.
Beyond public relations roles, Giwa has served in operational capacities such as crime officer, surveillance officer and human rights officer across various police formations in Lagos.
His appointment follows the recent designation of Anthony Okon Placid, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, as the new Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.
