Police Arrest Suspected Kidnap Kingpin, Recover AK-47 in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnap kingpin and recovered a prohibited firearm and ammunition during an operation in the state.
According to a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, on January 14, 2026, the suspect, Mohammed Ibrahim, aged 30 and a native of Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State, was apprehended on January 10, 2026, at about 7:46 p.m., by operatives attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit (ACU), Emohua Annex, following credible intelligence.
Iringe-Koko said Ibrahim is suspected to be involved in several kidnapping operations for ransom, particularly along the Port Harcourt International Airport Road, Omagwa, where he allegedly terrorised residents and commuters.
She said the suspect was arrested while reportedly planning to relocate his operational camp and weapons to the Agbonchia-Oyigbo Road area in Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
She explained that a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle with breach number 2125, as well as two magazines loaded with 36 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm live ammunition.

During preliminary interrogation, the spokesperson of the command said the suspect confessed to being the leader of a kidnapping syndicate involved in multiple operations within Rivers State.
She added that the suspect and recovered exhibits are currently in police custody, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the gang and recover additional weapons.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, commended the operatives for their swift action and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state, assuring the public that criminal elements would be brought to justice.
