Unity Estate Attack: Police Arrest 12, Recover Pump-Action Gun in Rivers
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested twelve suspects and recovered an automatic pump-action gun following a violent attack on Unity Estate, Mbodo–Aluu, along Airport Road, Port Harcourt.
A statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the incident occurred on January 5, 2026, at about 1:15 p.m., when suspected members of the Obio/Akpor Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), drawn from several communities in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, allegedly invaded the estate alongside hired thugs.
The attackers were said to be armed with pump-action guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, firing shots indiscriminately and causing panic among residents.
CSP Iringe-Koko said preliminary investigations identified Patrick Akandu and Omakwelem Onu Ihunwo Prince as coordinators of the attack. Both suspects, along with the Akpor OSPAC Commander, Azubuike, popularly known as “Ocean,” are currently at large.
She explained the attack reportedly led to the destruction of parts of the estate and damage to vehicles. One resident, Apostle Stephen Nmacha of Rumuekini Community, sustained a gunshot injury to the leg, which was shattered, before he was abducted by the attackers.
He was later rescued by police operatives and taken to a medical facility for treatment. Several other victims sustained injuries and escaped into nearby bushes.
Following a distress call, operatives from the Choba Division, supported by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Octopus Tactical Teams, swiftly moved to the scene, leading to the arrest of twelve suspects.
Items recovered from the suspects include one automatic pump-action gun, one live cartridge, expanded cartridges, assorted charms, five motorcycles, two mini-buses and one Siena van.
Condemning the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, described the actions of the OSPAC operatives as reckless and unacceptable, stressing that vigilante groups are expected to operate strictly under police supervision.
The state Police Command assured residents of Rivers State of their safety, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all fleeing suspects to ensure they are brought to justice.
Members of the public were urged to provide credible information that could assist in the arrest of those still at large.
