Delta Police Arraign 33 suspects Over New Year’s Eve Disturbances in Asaba
The Delta State Police Command has arraigned 33 suspects before a Magistrate Court in Asaba over offences linked to violent disturbances, public nuisance and other breaches of public peace recorded during New Year’s Eve security operations in the state capital.
A statement by the command's spokesman, SP Edafe Bright said the arrests were made at different locations within Asaba during intensified patrols mounted to maintain law and order as residents ushered in the New Year.
SP Bright explained that the suspects were arrested for offences ranging from violent conduct and public nuisance to drug-related activities.
After preliminary investigations, the Police said 33 suspects were found to have prima facie cases against them and were charged to court.
They were arraigned before Magistrate Court 1, Asaba, where three of the suspects were remanded in custody, while the remaining accused persons were granted bail pending the continuation of prosecution.
The Command also dismissed reports by an online medium, Sahara Reporters, describing them as misleading and sensational.
Police clarified that an individual repeatedly mentioned in the reports was neither arrested as a church worshipper nor rearrested over alleged interaction with the media.
According to the Police, the suspect was arrested alongside two other persons inside a Mercedes Benz GLK vehicle parked on a close opposite Pinnacle Hotel, Asaba, where they were allegedly purchasing illicit drugs from a suspected dealer.
The three suspects and the alleged drug dealer were arrested at the scene, with incriminating exhibits reportedly recovered.
Police further disclosed that one of the suspects, identified as a member of a sister security agency, was granted bail and released to his institution pending arraignment, as it was considered that his appearance in court could be secured through official channels.
The Command emphasised that the grant of bail does not terminate investigation or imply innocence, noting that investigations and prosecution are ongoing in line with due process.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the rule of law, the State Police Command urged members of the public to disregard misinformation and sensational reports capable of undermining lawful police operations, assuring residents of its resolve to maintain public order and safety.
