Lagos sets to implement provisions of FOI Act

The Lagos State Government has commenced the process of implementing the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. Governor BABATUNDE FASHOLA made this known at the closing of this year's Public Service Week in Alausa. He said will assemble a team of experts to advise the government on the FOI Act, and urged civil servants to be proactive in their duties. On the minimum wage, Governor FASHOLA said the state government decided to implement the eighteen thousand naira minimum wage to encourage the workforce.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Governor of Lagos State BABATUNDE FASHOLA has condemned the critics of his administration huge spending on the environment. FASHOLA at the state organized World Environment Day in Ikeja said no amount of money spent to curtail threats posed by the climate change would be too much. He said Nigeria remains the most vulnerable country in Africa to the challenge of climate change and global warming, calling for more sustainable enlightenment campaign on the environment in the country. Prominent Environmentalist NEWTON JIBUNOH on his part attributed the current challenges posed by the environment globally to negative and uncontrolled attitudes of the people to the environment.

Lagos Deputy Governor calls for review of federal character principle

The Deputy Governor of Lagos state, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire has called for an immediate review of the concept and practice of federal character principle towards building a virile and strong nation. Orelope-Adefulire told the visiting delegation of the Federal Character Commission in her office in Alausa argued that the call became imperative in order to ensure the much needed national integration. She also reiterated call for the institution of a special allocation for Lagos both as a former federal capital and as economic nerve centre of the country. Earlier, the Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, MUHAMMADU ARI-GWASKA, thanked the Lagos State Government for the manner it has integrated all ethnic groups resident in the State. He pointed out that Lagos is a clear example of the principle of federal character, noting that the matured leadership in Lagos is the basis for the unity and peaceful co-existence of the people residing in the state.

Lagos police begin evacuation of abandoned vehicles

The Lagos State Police Command has begun the evacuation of all abandoned vehicles within the premises of the state government secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja. The exercise may not be unconnected with a directive by the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim that all abandoned vehicles within the police stations and government installations across the country should be evacuated following series of the bomb explosions in some parts of the country. Correspondent Sulaymon Abdulkareem reports that more than ten of such vehicles were today removed around the state security outfit, the Rapid Response Squad to unknown destinations. A senior police officer attached to the RRS who confirmed the operation said it was in line with the directive by the Police IG to ensure safety of people, adding that the exercise would be a continuous one and extended to other parts of the state.

LAGOS NYSC PASSING OUT PARADE   The National Youths Service Corps in Lagos has withheld the certificates of six corps members that served in the state.   The State Director of the NYSC, Oladipupo Laniyan said the affected corps members are to face disciplinary committee for various offences committed during the course of service.   Laniyan who made this known at the passing out parade of the Batch B at the NYSC Iyana Ipaja Orientation Camp appealed to Governor Babatunde Fashola to fast track the relocation of the Orientation Camp to Ikorodu.   Fashola in his remarks promised that the state government would ensure improved security around the corps members in the face of recurring kidnapping of their colleagues in the country.   Correspondent Sulaymon Abdulkareem reports that two of the outgoing corps members got Governor’s Award while seven others received Certificates of Merit .   

Poultry association raises alarm over imminent increment in poultry products

The Poultry Association of Nigeria has warned that the prices of poultry products would increase this year because of rising cost of raw materials, especially grains. The South-West Chairman of the association, Doctor AYOOLA ODUNTAN told newsmen in Lagos that price of poultry feed would continue to rise if the government does not intervene. He urged the Federal Government to temporarily suspend the sale of grains and legumes to neigbouring countries in order to meet local demand.

JUNE 12: Lagos causes confusion over holiday

Some students and workers in Lagos today stayed at home thinking that the day had been declared as a public holiday to celebrate the June twelve, nineteen ninety three presidential election. A Cross-Section who spoke with our correspondent blamed the government for not coming out clearly enough that it was not a work-free day. Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti State governments declared the day as a public holiday to mark the June twelve anniversary.

Kwankwaso visits Fashola

Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso says it was the wish of the PDP to have his Lagos State counterpart, Babatunde Fashola run under the party’s platform in last governorship elections. Kwankwaso who made this known during a courtesy call on Fashola at the Ikeja Lagos House in Alausa said his administration has resolved to kick start a rebirth and economic partnership in Kano State. He said his visit was meant to see how to develop the two states and make the country a better place. Fashola in his response emphasised the need for each state of the federation to develop strategies on building the nation, adding the visit was key to both states as they share the challenge of rapid urbanization.

Fashola demands immediate evacuation of vehicles parked along airport road

The Lagos State Government has demanded for the immediate evacuation of vehicles parked along the Airport Road in Ikeja, Lagos, South West Nigeria. Most of the affected vehicles belong to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, as well as car dealers and military personnel. Governor BABATUNDE FASHOLA gave the order when he paid an unscheduled visit to the area. He said the traffic situation along the Airport Road has become a major source of concern to the state, especially as it affects security. Meanwhile, Governor FASHOLA has sworn-in five new permanent secretaries in the civil service of Lagos State. While perfuming the ceremony today, the governor urged them to see their appointments as a call to serve.

Lagos appoints Dr. Abdul-Azeez Abioye Lawal as ninth Rector of LASPOTECH

The Lagos State Government has approved the appointment of as the ninth Rector of the State Polytechnic, Ikorodu. Lawal whose appointment took effect on June 1st this year, has won many awards and prizes was the Director of the Institution’s School of Part Time Studies. He holds a 1984 first class degree in Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Master of Science (Management) and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos. Dr. Lawal, 50, from Lagos Island, joined the services of the Polytechnic in 1985 as a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration in 1985 and rose through the ranks to the position of Chief Lecturer in December 2007. Aside also being lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar in 2009, the Rector is also member of Academy of Management Nigeria and the Nigerian Institute of Management and has authored or co-authored books and papers in reputable professional journals.
