Police and Ports: Strengthening Security for Nigeria’s Blue Economy
Nigeria’s push to unlock the full potential of its marine and blue economy just got a boost - thanks to renewed collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
On Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun hosted the CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The high-level meeting brought together senior police officers and maritime stakeholders to reinforce a critical message: security is key to economic growth.
Why It Matters
Ports, waterways, and maritime transport are the lifeblood of Nigeria’s trade and a central pillar of the blue economy agenda. But without proper enforcement, monitoring, and protection, the sector faces threats ranging from cargo theft to regulatory non-compliance.
That’s where the Nigeria Police Force comes in.
Dr. Akutah praised the Police for their vital support in upholding port standards and enhancing transparency and efficiency along shipping corridors. He emphasized how critical this partnership has been in implementing tools like the Nigerian Port Manual, which helps regulate activities at ports and reduce corruption.
He called for stronger surveillance, enforcement, and logistical support, noting that such collaboration has a direct impact on economic performance.
A Commitment from the Top
Responding to the Council’s visit, IGP Egbetokun reassured stakeholders of the Police Force’s dedication to securing Nigeria’s maritime assets.
“We recognize the vital role the Shippers’ Council plays in national development. The Police Force will continue to provide the support needed to safeguard port operations and promote economic growth,” the IGP said.
He also promised increased cooperation with the Council’s Joint Task Teams, ensuring smooth enforcement, rapid response, and better coordination between law enforcement and economic regulators.
What This Means for Nigeria
This partnership is more than just a handshake - it’s a strategic alliance that ties security directly to development. When Nigeria’s ports are safer, goods move faster. When rules are enforced fairly, trust grows. And when institutions work together, the country benefits.
The meeting ends with a shared vision: a more secure, transparent, and prosperous blue economy, driven by collaboration between law enforcement and maritime stakeholders.
