Troops Kill ISWAP Shura Council Member, Commander, Others in Borno

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have reportedly neutralised several Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, including a member of the group's Shura Council, Abu Hajara, and a senior commander, Abul Walid, during an encounter in Kukawa, Borno State.

The military said two other high-ranking Arab fighters were also killed during the engagement on October 31, 2026, following an attack by ISWAP terrorists on troops' positions in the area.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, said the troops, supported by air assets, repelled the attack.

It identified Abul Walid as a prominent ISWAP commander and close associate of Ba Shuwa, described in the statement as the group's overall Wali.

The troops also recovered several weapons, ammunition and communication devices following the engagement.

The military described the operation as a significant setback to ISWAP's leadership and operational capacity, reaffirming its commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups across the North-East.

The Kukawa engagement came three days after an attack in Buni Yadi, where the military said 55 terrorists were neutralised, including key commanders identified as Ali Mandara Abba Gajiri, also known as Munzir; Habu Ikkima Nakif Yana Faruk; and Commander Gogore.

The Theatre Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting law-abiding citizens and continuing operations aimed at dismantling terrorist camps and eliminating insurgent threats in the region.
