Nigeria Prizes Open for 2026 Entries, Spotlight AI, Poetry and Documentary Film

The Nigeria Prizes have opened entries for the 2026 competition cycle, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Poetry, and Documentary Filmmaking.

The organisers announced that the Call for Entries officially commenced on Sunday, marking the start of the 2026 edition of the competition, which remains one of Nigeria’s leading platforms for recognising excellence in science, innovation, literature and the creative arts.

According to the organisers, the Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation will retain the theme “Innovations in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Technologies for Development”, following a no-winner outcome in the 2025 cycle.

Speaking on the launch, NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Ms. Sophia Horsfall, said the themes were chosen to reflect global shifts driven by digital technologies and creative expression.

She noted that advances in ICT, artificial intelligence and digital tools continue to transform industries and societies, adding that the prizes were designed to reward ideas and talents capable of delivering long-term national impact.

The Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Science and Innovation Prize, Prof. Barth Nnaji, called on scientists and innovators from around the world to submit entries that go beyond theory and demonstrate practical, scalable and deployable solutions.

He said the prize recognises innovations grounded in rigorous research, with clear potential for application within Nigeria’s development context.

The Science and Innovation Prize is valued at USD $100,000 and is open to scientists and innovators globally. Entries are expected to showcase digital and AI-driven solutions capable of improving efficiency, strengthening systems and supporting informed decision-making across key sectors of Nigeria’s economy.

For the Nigeria Prize for Literature, the 2026 cycle will focus on Poetry. Nigerian poets at home and in the diaspora are invited to submit poetry collections published from 2023 onwards. The Literature Prize is also valued at USD $100,000.

The Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Nigeria Prize for Literature and the Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts, Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, described the introduction of the Creative Arts Prize as a significant milestone in NLNG’s long-standing commitment to cultural development.

She said the Creative Arts Prize recognises creative excellence across different forms, while the focus on poetry highlights the genre’s role in social reflection and cultural memory.

The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts will debut in 2026 with Documentary Film under the theme “Identity”. Valued at USD $20,000, the prize targets emerging Nigerian filmmakers aged 18 to 35, and encourages documentary works that explore personal, communal and cultural identities.

The Creative Arts Prize aims to support young filmmakers in producing compelling documentaries that reflect lived experiences and reshape global perceptions of Nigeria.
