Nigeria Police Force Gets New Acting IGP as Olatunji Ridwan Disu Assumes Office



The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has assumed duty as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, taking over the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

He succeeds Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun (Rtd), who served as the 22nd indigenous Inspector-General of Police from June 19, 2023, to February 24, 2026.

Born on April 13, 1966, Disu hails from Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State. He holds multiple academic qualifications, including an MSc in Entrepreneurship from the National Open University of Nigeria (2023); MSc in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University (2022); an Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence from the University of Lagos (2019); MSc in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University (2010); PGD in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Lagos State University (2000); and a B.A. in English (Education) from Lagos State University (1990).

He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and brings decades of operational, investigative, intelligence and administrative experience to the office. Until his appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

Over the years, Disu has held several strategic positions, including AIG, Special Protection Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja; Commissioner of Police, FCT Police Command; Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command; Commissioner of Police, Administration and Intelligence at the Force Intelligence Bureau; Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head of the Intelligence Response Team; and Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos, from 2015 to 2021.

He also served as Officer in Charge of Anti-Kidnapping in Rivers State; Officer in Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Ondo and Oyo states; Divisional Police Officer in Ondo State; Directing Staff at the Nigerian Police Academy, Kano; Aide-de-Camp to a former Governor of Lagos State; and Officer in Charge of Anti-Fraud at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Katsina.

Disu is a member of several professional bodies, including the International Academy of Forensics, the National Association of Investigative Specialists (USA), the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

In 2005, he led the first Nigerian Police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) during the Darfur crisis.

Beyond policing, he is an accomplished martial artist, a former National Chairman of the Nigeria Police Judo Association, and a third-degree black belt holder in Judo. He also won a silver medal at the 2022 US Open Judo Championships.

The Nigeria Police Force expressed appreciation to the immediate past Inspector-General, Egbetokun, for his contributions to the growth, modernisation and strengthening of the Force.

In his remarks, the Acting IGP reassured officers, stakeholders and the public of his commitment to consolidating ongoing reforms, enhancing internal security, strengthening community partnerships and upholding global best practices in the protection of lives and property.

The Force called for continued public support and cooperation as the new leadership works to deepen professionalism, discipline and service delivery nationwide.
