2015: Atiku, Tinubu, others in secret meeting with Obasanjo in Abeokuta
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some leaders
of the All Progressives Congress on Friday continued their consultation with
former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Abubakar and other leaders of the APC, including a
former Minister of Education, Prof. Babalola Borishade who is also the Director
General of the Atiku Campaign Organisation and Chief Oyewole Fasawe, an
associate of the former president held a 35-minute closed-door meeting with
Obasanjo at his hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Others at the meeting with Obasanjo were Prof. Maxwell
Gidado, Director (Legal) of the ACO, Senator Mohammed Ohiare (Kogi Central) and
Dr. Adeolu Akande.
Also, the former governor of Lagos and APC national
leader, Senator Bola Tinubu was said to have earlier held a separate closed
door meeting with Obasanjo along with former Governor of Ekiti, Chief Segun
Oni.
Speaking with newsmen immediately after the meeting,
the former vice president said he had come to pay his “respect” to Obasanjo and
to also discuss the state of the nation with him.
He also described his relationship with Obasanjo as
“extremely cordial”.
The former vice president however expressed regret at
the defection of the former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, some
National and state Assembly lawmakers from the APC to the SDP.
He described their exit as “regrettable and unfortunate”
but expressed hope that the situation could still be salvaged.
“Yes, I’m the chairman of the South west reconciliation
committee but we have also decided to set up an elders’ sub-committee of that
committee to try and see if there will be what I call internal reconciliation
before the bigger committee looks at the reconciliation process.
“It is regrettable, it is unfortunate but I believe
it is a situation that is still reconcilable. This is a situation that has been
going on for quite some time and we’ve not given up,” Abubakar said.
Earlier, the former vice president paid a courtesy visit
to Governor Ibikunle Amosun in his Oke-Mosan office.
Speaking during the visit to the governor, Abubakar
commended Governor Amosun for the achievements his administration has so far
recorded.
He described it as “phenomenal and unbelievable” and
urged the people to allow him to have a second term in office.
Abubakar also later held a closed door meeting with
APC leaders in the state. – The Sun
